Art in the Garage provides a safe and supportive Art Studio for people with a disability living in the Bega Valley Shire.
The project was initiated nine years ago and supports 22 artists with disability in their art making. Local artists work as educators in 'one on one' art making sessions giving sensitive support and technical assistance that fosters the unique creativity of individuals.
The artists supported by the project are from diverse age groups and are known for their unique and dynamic art making. Art which has been featured in 15 highly acclaimed group and individual exhibitions. Individual artists have also been selected to exhibit their works in The Powerhouse Gallery, Sydney; Parliament House, Sydney; and the Armadale Regional Gallery.
Twelve panels for a public art work entitled “The Meeting Place” were created by artists supported by Art in the Garage. The mural is currently on display in Bega's C.B.D.
Three new Art Studios set in a sculpture garden adjoining the original Studio are in the early phase of construction. An exciting new art making and exhibition space, set in a landscaped art filled environment with facilities for ceramics, print making and sculpture.
Art in the Garage has received grants from the Mumbulla Foundation, Bega Valley Shire CDSE (Community Development Support Expenditure), Perpetual Trustees, The Ian Potter Foundation and The Myer Foundation
