Preparation and Bagging of Potting Mix
Bulk potting mix is purchased from landscape suppliers. A slow release fertilizer (8 – 9 months) is then added, mixed and bagged. The blend used has been specifically chosen for its suitability for natives plants
Rag Supplies and Cutting
This operation is mainly undertaken to supply and service the local community. At the present time rags are received through the local Salvation Army unit which are then cut and returned. The nursery supplies a number of local businesses with their rag requirements.
Survey Peg/Indicator Stick Manufacture
A variety of survey pegs and indicators sticks are manufactured from locally sourced hardwood. Currently sizes manufactured are 50mm x 50mm and 50mm x 25mm at various lengths – they come painted or unpainted with either 4 or 2 pointed ends (dependant upon customer requirements.
Other sizes can be manufactured to order. Contact the Nursery to discuss your requirements.
Christmas Tree Farm
The nursery started planning this project late in 2005. Following considerable support by a local landholder (donating the use of his land for the first rotation of trees); Forests NSW, Monaro Region (donation of 1,000 specifically bred New Zealand Christmas trees); and land preparation by an adjoining land owner – the first year’s Christmas trees were planted on Friday 29 September 2006.
The ‘Christmas Tree Farm’ is located at the corner of Darcy Lane and the Snowy Mountains Highway (Bega to Tathra Road), Jellat Jellat. This is the first rotation of a four year rolling plan to supply the local community with ‘live’ Christmas trees. The trees take three to four years to mature to the point of harvesting at 1.8 to 2.4 metres in height.
The trees will be shaped twice a year. The next rotation of trees is scheduled to be planted in August 2007.
